My Veterinary Glossary

Hi, my name is Marianne Jubinville and I have been studying Sciences at Montmorency College. I would like to continue my studies to become a veterinary. I would be the equivalent of a doctor but for all types of animal. I have decided to make a glossary for the students who would like to attempt any kind of medicine program. I have made this glossary to help you understand the basics of the most common diseases and health problems. By learning the meaning of the words that are in this glossary, you would be better prepared to impress your professor in your first year of study.

alopecia

noun

The partial or complete absence of hair from areas of the body where it normally grows; baldness.

Example: A history of androgenetic ALOPECIA on either side of your family increases your risk of balding. - Our cat has suffered from ALOPECIA since she caught ringworm.

anaphylaxis

noun

This is a rare, life-threatening, immediate allergic reaction to something ingested or injected. If untreated, it results in shock, respiratory and cardiac failure, and death. It can also be referred to as anaphylactic shock or anaphylactoid reaction.

Example: He dies of an ANAPHYLACTIC shock. - He must keep his adrenaline shots in the kitchen to treat his ANAPHYLAXIS, the name of the serious allergic reaction he suffers.

arrhythmia

A condition in which the heart beats with an irregular or abnormal rhythm.

Example: An acute exposure to butane increase the risk of a cardiac ARRHYTHMIA. - What precaution should be taken by a woman with a history of heart ARRHYTHMIA before planning a pregnancy?

The act of listening either directly with the ear or with a stethoscope to sounds coming from the body, such as from the lungs, as a method of diagnosis.

Example: An AUSCULTATION may be needed to correctly appose a diagnosis. - The doctor made an AUSCULTATION to listen directly at my cat's heart beat.

Example: The subject appears to have a BILATERAL facial paralysis.

Taking small sample of tissue removed from a living body to discover the presence, cause, or extent of a disease. Usually refers to tumor or the skin.

Example: A skin BIOPSY is needed to confirm the diagnosis. - The BIOPSY results show a favorable prognosis and no sign of cancer.

A heart beat that is slower than normal.

Example: His high level of carbon dioxide in his blood evokes a strong cardiorespiratory response including gasping and a pronounced BRADYCARDIA.

(of a person) Having an illness persisting for a long time or constantly recurring.

Example: CHRONIC stress plays an important role in heart attacks. - The latest research on cancer and heart disease shows that a weakened immunity may even influence the risk of these CHRONIC diseases.

A condition that occurred since birth.

Example: He was born with a CONGENITAL heart defect that left him with chronic health problems. - Mutations in genes can cause CONGENITAL deformity.

Any fluid that emerges from a sore or infection.

Example: The doctor had to open the wound to get the DISCHARGE out.

dyspnoea

Difficult or labored breathing.

Example: His panic attacks are usually followed by DYSPNOEA.

Relating to illness caused by medical examination or treatment by the veterinary.

Example: My dog has developed multiple side effects due to IATROGENIC manipulations of the veterinary.

lethargy

noun

A pathological state of sleepiness or deep unresponsiveness and inactivity.

Example: Since he got sick the cat has been in a state of LETHARGY!

neoplasia

noun

The formation or presence of a new, abnormal growth of tissue or accumulation of cells. It can also be called a tumor, neoplasia may be benign or malignant.

Example: As an example, spayed female pets are unlikely to develop mammary cancer, a common small-animal NEOPLASIA. - Scientists suggest that active and passive cigarette smoking increases the risk of development of a cervical NEOPLASIA.

noun

A substance which is given that has no therapeutic value; often called a 'dummy pill' or 'sugar pill.' Often given to half of the patients in a trial of a new drug, to better assess the effectiveness of the new drug.

Example: Recent research results show that patients actually did worse on the drugs than if they were given a PLACEBO. - When it comes to the PLACEBO effect, it really may be mind over matter, a new analysis suggests.

noun

A hardening of tissue, usually the result of chronic inflammation.

Example: Early diagnosis of multiple SCLEROSIS can change the lives of people living with this chronic disease of the central nervous system.

second generation

adjective

A description of medications developed from an earlier form of the medication. First generation medications were developed from the original form of the drug; second generation medications are adaptations of first generation drugs; third generation drugs are adaptations of second generation, etc.

Example: The veterinary prescribed a SECOND GENERATION medication to our cat because the first generation didn't give the expected effects.

An abnormally high heart rate.

Example: The mother of three from Enfield had a catheter ablation to treat ventricular TACHYCARDIA, or fast heart rhythm. - Because of the arrhythmia, which was a ventricular TACHYCARDIA that was inducible, we then went on and implanted the defibrillator or, as has been called, the pacemaker plus.

urticaria

noun

A rash of round, red welts on the skin that itch intensely, sometimes with dangerous swelling, caused by an allergic reaction, typically to specific foods.

Example: The cause of chronic URTICARIA is often more difficult to identify.

virus

noun

The smallest form of life, invisible with an ordinary microscope. An infectious unit that enters and uses cells of plants or animals for replication. Some viruses cause disease in animals or plants.

Example: Bees were dying out due to a mystery VIRUS and as a result the world was facing a massive food shortage. - It came without warning, a deadly airborne VIRUS has been unleashed upon the world, and the victims are dropping like flies.

zoonoses

noun

Diseases that can be passed from animals to humans.

Example: Eighty per cent of all human emerging diseases are ZOONOSES, that is, they originate in animals. - ZOONOSES often have serious knock-on effects besides the illnesses they cause.
